OKO FARMS OFFERS REMOTE AND IN-PERSON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER YOUTH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS

VIRTUAL FARM TOUR

Students explore our farm through an interactive virtual tour of our aquaponics system. As they explore the system, they learn how fish, plants, water, and beneficial bacteria work together to create a thriving ecosystem. Students are introduced to the different species of fish we raise and the vegetables we grow — and discover how each plays an important role in keeping the system balanced.

Beyond the farm itself, students examine how aquaponics offers an innovative solution to real-world challenges. They learn how this method of growing food uses less water, minimizes waste, and can increase access to fresh produce in communities that need it most. This workshop brings together ecology, food systems, and environmental stewardship in a dynamic and accessible way.

Learn about the wide variety of plants and aquatic animals that live on the farm and discover how they support one another in a dynamic, symbiotic relationship. During our guided tour, participants are introduced to aquaponics and the many biological components that work together to keep our ecosystem balanced and thriving.

You’ll also get an up-close look at the hardware components that help maintain water quality, circulate nutrients, and support the overall wellbeing of our plants and fish. The tour includes a sensory experience of the farm.

Please dress comfortably for the weather, as part of the tour takes place outdoors. Wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. We recommend bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated.

BLUE CREW YOUTH PROGRAM

The Blue Crew Youth Program is a 20-week, immersive training experience in urban agriculture designed for young adults ages 18–25. This hands-on program equips participants with a solid foundation in aquaponics farming—combining soilless plant cultivation with aquaculture—as well as small farm management, food justice, and culinary education.

Throughout the program, strong emphasis is placed on career readiness within the food and urban agriculture fields. Participants develop essential job and entrepreneurial skills while receiving guidance and support for job placement and/or launching their own ventures. Participants receive a bi-weekly stipend to support their training.
