A Cotton Conversation

  • Oko Farms 100 Scott Ave Br Brooklyn, NY, 11249 United States (map)

Join us for an afternoon of conversation and hands-on engagement with our NYC grown cotton!

Since 2021, Oko Farms has been experimenting with connecting to our cultural heritage through growing fiber and dye plants and learning from experts in traditional weaving and dyeing methods. This work has re-introduced us to cotton, allowing us to form a new relationship with this ancient plant which was revered in several ancient cultures for its exceptional lightness and durability and medicinal properties. Together, we will engage in a discussion about our relationships to cotton and indigo; agricultural crops beyond food; clothing; fast fashion; and cultural history. Participants will also practice hand spinning cotton into thread using basic tools in the exact process that our ancestors used thousands of years ago in their everyday lives.
