Who We Are
Oko Edu is an immersive online learning experience built on over a decade of aquaponics farming in New York City. Our courses are taught by Farmer Yemi, Oko Farms' founder and one of NYC's leading voices in urban, sustainable agriculture.
At Oko Edu, we believe that growing food is both a practical skill and a powerful act. Our curriculum goes beyond technique, connecting learners to the deeper story of why food systems matter, who they serve, and how aquaponics can help build a more resilient, equitable world.
What You Can Expect:
🌱 Learn by Doing: Hands-on, practical curriculum designed for real-world application. Whether you're growing on a rooftop, in a classroom, or in your backyard.
🐟 Taught by Farmers: Every lesson is grounded in lived experience. Farmer Yemi brings the knowledge of accessible aquaponics directly to your screen.
🌍 Rooted in Purpose: Our approach is inspired by Traditional Ecological Knowledge — low-tech, accessible, and deeply connected to community resilience and food justice.
What You’ll Learn
Explore how aquaponics increases food access, saves water, and builds climate resilience. You'll understand the historical roots of this practice in Traditional Ecological Knowledge and be able to articulate how sustainable food production connects to equity and community empowerment.
Build Fundamental Knowledge
Learn to match system design with your unique space, climate, and goals. You'll understand how fish tanks, grow beds, pumps, and plumbing fit together, and gain the confidence to build a small or mid-size system from scratch.
Design Systems That Work
Understand the science behind aquaponics and how beneficial bacteria convert fish waste into plant food. You'll learn to safely cycle a new system, test water quality, and create conditions where fish, plants, and microorganisms all thrive together.
Keep Fish and Plants Thriving
Meet your instructor, Farmer Yemi.
Yemi Amu is a farmer, educator, and the Founder and Director of Oko Urban Farms, Inc. In 2013, she established the Oko Farms Aquaponics Farm and Education Center, New York City's first and only publicly accessible outdoor aquaponics farm.
With over a decade of experience in urban agriculture and aquaponics, Yemi has supported the creation and maintenance of more than 20 growing spaces across NYC and developed hands-on programs in farming, nutrition, and culinary practice for youth and adults. Her work uses aquaponics as a tool to foster environmental awareness, community connection, and a deeper relationship to the food system.
Yemi holds a Master's degree in Health and Nutrition Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 2021, she joined the inaugural cohort of the Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab, created by Theaster Gates in collaboration with Prada.
